DameTrendV1: Understanding a Systematic Trend-Following Bot

Yuka Finance Guide — algorithmic trading and trend following

DameTrendV1 is an Expert Advisor (EA) — an automated trading bot — that applies a systematic trend-following strategy. Understanding how it works, and above all how to correctly interpret its performance, helps avoid the classic judgment errors that come with this type of strategy.

Real-time tracking

Each instance of the bot attached to a chart publishes its state every 15 seconds: current position, floating profit or loss (in dollars and in R risk units), filter status, and the Donchian levels used for decision-making. Every position close is also logged, with the actual R calculated from the initial risk recorded at entry — including when the close comes directly from the broker (for example, a trailing stop being hit).

The design of a trend-following strategy

Trend-following strategies have a characteristic performance profile, very different from a high-win-rate strategy:

Expected win rate: 35 to 45% — most trades are losing or neutral. The strategy's profitability does not come from the win rate, but from a few large moves that generate gains of 2 to 5R or more, more than enough to offset the more frequent but limited losses.

How to correctly judge performance

A series of small consecutive losses is perfectly normal behavior for this type of strategy, and should not be interpreted as a malfunction. The right evaluation metrics are:

Judging the strategy on its last trade, or even on a recent series of losses, consistently leads to mistaken conclusions about this type of system.
